Graphics memory usage

Post by thosrtanner » 2020-06-27, 06:16

So, in view of the response to the last thread, I created a blank profile in basilisk (completely blank), went to the bbc home page and opened up every headline on that page.

My dedicated graphics memory usage went up to 2Gb

I closed every tab

My dedicated graphics memory usage stayed at 2Gb

Repeated the test, and dedicated graphics memory usage went to 3 1/2 Gb

Here is this troubleshooting information:

and over a day that adds up. why does it not release the memory back?

Programs like games seem to get to a maximum and then stop. Whereas palemoon / basilisk just sit there, gradually increasing memory usage. And I have seen games start to complain they can't get graphics memory after the browser has been running for a long time.

And in the 2nd part of the test, where the memory goes up when redisplaying already displayed images? Which seems to me to indicate that the graphics card is now storing two copies of each image.

Graphics memory is not an infinite resource.

And... has it actually caused issues, or is your graphics driver simply using what it has available? How are you measuring this GPU memory use?
What is about:memory telling you?
All Pale Moon's calls for these kinds of resources go through well-defined system APIs (DirectX in your case). Since it's clearly not a problem on other systems, the calling sites can presumed to be OK.

I'm measuring GPU memory usage from task manager.

And yes, it has caused problems from time to time. And because I'm now home all day due to lockdown, and I connect remotely to my work desktop, there seems to be a lot more resource contention

I followed your process ~4 hours ago on a 32-bit Basilisk with several days uptime already on it, GPU memory usage increase (1060 6GB drivers only) was ~7%, process increase was ~400Mb (800-2000-1200).

W7 x64 (lean) 16GB, GPU usage from HWiNFO, PC uptime approaching 9 days, 8 of which it was running F@H.

Looks like W10/nVidia bloatware/unknown 3rd party 'utilities'? might be in the frame for your counts?

Maybe the much lauded new-look (but also crippled during the 'upgrade') TaskMan might be flaky too?

Or the pages from the website are changed.

Those mega-garbage commercial sites can download a lot of different things every time you reload their pages.

Well, I dont have much choice about the graphics drivers. And I don't see anything like the same graphics memory usage in firefox after the same procedure.

If there's something else I can use to check gpu memory allocation, I'd certainly take a look. But I have seen other programs complain they can't get resources to render textures

I've tried all BBC front page links and uBlock origin blocks an average of 15 items on each page. It's on the low spectrum for a TV website.

Nevertheless, it loads anyway some garbage javascript from mybbc-analytics.files.bbci.co.uk and chartbeat.com and doubleclick.net, and...

As stated earlier, I use HWiNFO to check hardware stats, like GPU memory usage, that can't be done natively by W7.

Here's a TaskMan trace of System memory/CPU usage whilst following your test procedure again after I made the previous post, approx 14 minutes worth (includes a bonus GC/CC/minimize memory usage ripple close to the end) :

'other programs' isn't particularly useful but I'm currently of the opinion W10 and/or the latest nVidia bloatware is being umm, overcautious.
