No Close Tab Button

Unread post by tinkerer » 2019-10-22, 04:18

Version 28.5.2

There is no close tab button.

Tried everything suggested in this thread:

viewtopic.php?t=17075

I did install the extension Tab Mix Plus.

I don't think this bug is fixable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you're using Tab Mix Plus, you can configure it to close tab by middle-clicking on it. Assuming you have a mouse, of course.

Also, please update to the latest version of Pale Moon. You're falling behind in important security and bugfixes.

The instructions in the linked thread do work for me.
(If it matters, I don't have TMP or other tab extensions installed.)

Tab Mix Plus has its own settings to manage close buttons. How are yours set?

To get a close button on every tab (with TMP):

Tab Mix Plus Options (in Add-ons Manager, or in Tools menu) -> Display -> Tab
In the "Show on Tab" section tick the box for "Close tab button", and in the dropdown menu select "on all"

My experience:

TMP builds are very dependent on PM builds.
And - TMP hates working alongside any extension that also wants to access tab functionality.

To assess the "no close button" thing, first you test it in a vanilla profile.
Then you add TMP and re assess. (Latest build of TMP + latest build of PM)

The more you then add, the better the chances that the close button will go tits up.

I've put loads of care into this, and my guess is that in every 30 times I launch PM I will lose the close button.
And a PM restart fixes it.

In general, not good to have duplicate functionality. There are several tab extensions that do individual features of TMP or have some overlap - makes no sense to have both. Kind of like installing 2 antivirus programs.

Sure. That's simply a given.
But is not the point I was attempting to make.

coffeebreak, my copy of TMP is configured as you suggested. Again,
there is no close tab button.

Yes moonbat, I definitely use a mouse. For some reason, I forgot about
the mouse-clicking options available in TMP. Middle-clicking on a tab
works great. Thanks for reminding me about that feature in TMP.

I have several browsers and I've tried more than I can remember. This
problem with the close tab button, has it happened with other Mozilla
based browsers? It's new to me.

Years ago I was a phanatic about fixing all software bugs, no matter how
small. I don't do that anymore. I'll close tabs with a middle-click. There
is a good chance the close tab button with reappear when I move on to
newer versions of Pale Moon.

I used to use Seamonkey between the introduction of Australis and the XUL deprecation announcement, and since it has many features out of the box, one if I recall was to either show the close button on each individual tab, or just have one at the extreme right.

That feature is still available using TMP:

Seamonkey has never had close buttons on tabs. Only the close button on the right. Got the Firefox pref but the code was never completed. This stands even today.

Though, honestly, it isn't that important since middle click can also close tabs.

TMP may expose the pref but it has been in Firefox since forever.

It's still available in PM without it too: browser.tabs.closeButtons = 3

I temporarily installed TMP. With its default setting, the one shown earlier, I still have close buttons on every tab. If that's not the case for you, it could be due to a conflict with a custom theme or another extension (in particular, but not necessarily limited to tab-related ones), or with some other setting in TMP itself.

A few things to try...

- 1. If you do use any other tab-related extension(s), or a custom theme, see if disabling either of those restores the close buttons. Also, if you happen to use userChrome, check if you put anything in there that affects tabs and their buttons.

- 2. Try changing TMP's close button setting to: "Close tab button on all tabs wider than" and select a very small width, even "1" or "0".
tmp-closebuttons2.png
This would return you to using Pale Moon's native settings to display close buttons (TMP would stop overriding them with its own default):
browser.tabs.closeButtons = 1 plus browser.tabs.tabClipWidth = 0 (or some other small number; default value = 140)
(Without TMP, a browser restart is required for tabClipWidth changes to take effect. I don't know if that's still required with TMP.)

For info, values for browser.tabs.closeButtons are here:
Where to show tab close buttons:
0 on active tab only
1 on all tabs until tabClipWidth is reached, then active tab only
2 no close buttons at all
3 at the end of the tabstrip
pref("browser.tabs.closeButtons", 1);
- 3. If the above doesn't help, try restoring all TMP settings to their defaults. Back up (export) your TMP settings first. (There's a button for all that, bottom left in TMP's Options window.) If this restores the close buttons, it would indicate a conflict with another TMP setting. Figuring out which one would be a matter of trial and error.

If none of the above helps, you can try troubleshooting first with safe mode, then with a fresh profile.

See what SeaTab-X-2 might do?

Looks like it should work.
But you'll need to add a PaleMoon section to install.rdf.

Code: Select all

		<!-- Pale Moon -->
		<em:targetApplication>
			<Description>
				<em:id>{8de7fcbb-c55c-4fbe-bfc5-fc555c87dbc4}</em:id>
				<em:minVersion>24.6.2</em:minVersion>
				<em:maxVersion>28.*</em:maxVersion>
			</Description>
		</em:targetApplication>
(I arbitrarily set minVersion to 24.6.2.)

Dude, no. tabbrowser binding between SeaMonkey and a Phoenix browser past 3.6 have almost nothing in common even then what it is targeting is about the 1.5 level at best..

It won't work and doesn't even make sense cause tab close buttons is a Firefox introduced feature.. Pale Moon has always had this and is the default.

Silly therube.
