Display issue with navigation buttons

Unread postby BillZM » Tue, 13 Mar 2018, 07:08

Not sure what's happening or how to fix it.

This display issue comes and goes. Odd patterns seem overlayed with the back button and the stop loading button as illustrated below:

Buttons function normally but I'm tired of looking at the display glitches.

Need to tweak preferences in menus or about:config? Tried turning off hardware acceleration but that doesn't help.

Latest Pale Moon x86 running in latest 32-bit Windows 10. HP 6730b (Intel Core 2 Duo) laptop with integrated Intel graphics and latest video driver.

This might be an issue with the theme your are using. Does it also happen when using the default theme?

Yes, it also happens with the default theme. I haven't tried too many themes. I wonder if some are immune to this. Good thought.

Looks like I'm one of those immune types.

I don't have any issues with the navigation buttons which the OP describes and which are causing problems for him. And anyone can see what I'm running OS wise as well as bit wise for Pale Moon by looking at my signature.

I've had graphical issues when using hardware acceleration. Perhaps that is the cause.

Since my computers are older computers, from 2010 to 2013, I always have hardware acceleration turned off.

Think I found a solution. Still have hardware acceleration on.

Running Pale Moon Commander extension, then entering menu Preferences \ Advanced Preferences \ Graphics \ Rendering \ Layers acceleration:

Selecting "Prefer Direct3D 9" as Layers acceleration mode seems to fix it. Or unchecking "Layers acceleration enabled" also fixes it.
Not sure yet whether performance is affected with either setting.

fyi, this is the display issue I used to have. Turning off all forms of hardware acceleration seems to be the safest way to solve these problems. It just uses a bit more CPU when watching videos :)

Thanks. Looks like I stumbled into the same two tweaks given by pmoonuser2016 near the end of that thread (whether using Pale Moon Commander settings or typing directly into about:config). So far that's working.

pmoonuser2016 mentioned AMD and nvidia integrated graphics. Mine is Intel integrated graphics. Perhaps Pale Moon's "default" layers acceleration mode is OpenGL?; I don't believe my laptop has a good driver for that; I know it has rendering issues in LibreOffice if I select OpenGL. It's a 2008 Intel Core 2 Duo design, so maybe this is a "vintage" issue.

I'll check out the other threads linked in that thread too.

Wow! In this thread ( viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1462 ) linked within the other linked thread above, Moonchild covers this topic very well (back in 2012!). I'm running old hardware, so I guess that advice still applies!
