Third party password manager compatibility?

Post by ElDani » 2013-11-28, 08:09

Edit: I just saw that this thread was posted in a totally inappropriate forum. Sorry about that  If a mod/admin would be so kind and move it to the Community Support forum, I'd appreciate it.

Hello everyone,

I have been using the combination of Pale Moon + KeePass + KeeFox enthusiastically for a while now and it provides most of what I was looking for. If only there wasn't a lack of usable Chrome/Chromium/Opera extensions for KeePass - chromeIPass wasn't worth my time and trouble.

Now I've taken a closer look at some commercial password managers (1Password, Sticky Password and RoboForm), because they all offer a wide-spread browser integration. Here's where I have run into problems:

1Password : the extension can be installed in Pale Moon, but it won't connect to the password manager (some kind of error with the websocket connection?). The same happens with Opera 18, by the way.
Sticky Password : Pale Moon isn't on the list of supported browsers, but the .xpi can be installed manually. However, the extension doesn't appear to connect with the password manager and its unlocked database.
RoboForm : the current version can be used with Pale Moon (great!), but it is an NPAPI plugin and not a true extension, meaning that it doesn't work with Win 8 metro browsers and will stop working in Chrome as of January 2014.

What I'm looking for isn't necessarily a way to get the 1Password/Sticky Password extensions into a working condition, though I'd be happy with that as well. I'm more curious if you're using a centralized password manager with different browsers and if so, is it working with Pale Moon?

Regards,
Daniel

I've moved this to Tech Chat - as it's more about the integration of third party software with multiple browsers than it is about needing support for Pale Moon 8-) - no suggestions as to your question; I use Pale Moon's built-in password manager for my web password needs.

I use LastPass, integrates with PM, FF, Chrome and IE (all loaded but rarely used) plus my Androids.

Keepass auto type should be enough?

Thanks for moving the topic, Moonchild.

Rohugh: LastPass would be one of my favorite tools ever, if it weren't for the storage on a remote server. While I don't have a problem with that myself - the most sensitive accounts like banking won't ever be accessed through my everyday browser anyway - my employer thinks differently. As there are a good number of these logins stored in my password database, LastPass is a no-go unfortunately.

Thanks for your reply SmirGel. While I agree with you in AutoType being the most universal tool ever, it also requires quite a bit of manual work to get it set-up properly. Even then it's not the most comfortable solution, because it requires at least two key-strokes per log-in attempt. I have to be honest and tell you, that I really prefer the method I know from Keefox and that I'm quite hesitant to manually edit my whole KeePass database (486 entries) to work with AutoType.

Did you not like ChromeIPass? I'm using PassIFox, which is the Firefox version of that same extension.
