Edit of file adds scroll arrows in PM but not FF, why? This is in Linux

Unread post by ron_1 » 2017-07-09, 03:16

I'm wondering why this works in Pale Moon but not Firefox (yes, I know Pale Moon is not Firefox and never will be again ;) ). I'm using Linux Mint 18.2 Mate 64 bit. On the Mint forums, somebody posted a link to this explaining how to get scroll arrows in Firefox. The post is from 2 years ago, and it worked then in Firefox. I edited the file as explained, and opened Pale Moon and to my surprise and joy, I now had scroll arrows. I then opened Firefox, my backup browser, but no scroll arrows there. Since apparently it's the system-wide theme that is drawing the scroll arrows, why doesn't it work in Firefox while it does work in Pale Moon?

Okay, I found the answer which was right under my nose. I had to edit a different file to get the scroll arrows in Firefox. I found the answer here:

So apparently the current version of FF in Linux Mint is a gtk3 program while Pale Moon is (thankfully) gtk2.

Firefox has been shipping as GTK3 binaries on Linux since v46, with the exception of distros where GTK3 isn't available.

Thanks MC. I've learned quite a bit today.
