How to install uBlock Origin in Pale Moon 27 [revised]

Unread post by gracious1 » 2018-05-01, 04:56

Raymond Hill's enormously popular uBlock Origin is now available in a special legacy edition. Although Mozilla's Add-ons Site offers the Web Extensions edition, Pale Moon 27 requires the XUL or "full add-on" or legacy edition. So here is how to install the correct edition for Pale Moon 27.

1. Go to the uBlock Origin Releases page at GitHub (a version-control repository and Internet hosting site).

2. Scroll down until you see a heading for "firefox-legacy" in blue letters, followed by numbers.

3. Now we install the extension.
a. Look under Assets, and you will see the link for the package uBlock0.firefox-legacy.xpi . This is the XUL edition that will properly function in Pale Moon.
b. Click on this link. Click "Allow" if prompted by a pop-up.

4. Now look in your Add-ons Manager. You should see uBlock Origin installed with the beloved Blue Dot.

Nice work!

5. Optional step:
Install JustOff's uBlock Origin Updater. This will automatically update uBlock Origin so that you will not have to repeat steps 1-4 in order to update the extension.

If you did not install JustOff's uBlock Origin Updater as mentioned in step 5, then yes, you need to reinstall. In fact, that would be the way to update the extension even if Raymond Hill had not created this new branch. The old version is overwritten when you install the new version.

Cheers!

Not sure what the difficulty is. I just installed uBlock Origin Updater on another machine to test, and it installed just fine. Can you be more specific about what you did, and what occurred as a result?

I’ve just registered here only to thank you for your clever and detailed instructions. It works! And I am very dull and live in Siberia. Thank you once again.

I'm having a hell of a time getting anything to block ads on Facebook (EasyList reports have gone nowhere), so I'm resorting to uBLock Origin to see how that goes.
Just an FYI for anyone trying to install with NoScript. You'll need to (temporarily) completely disable XSS protection to get the add-on to install.

Care to explain further?
At least I've never seen NoScript to interfere with any other extensions installation?

There's some discussion on page one of the original (pre-revised) tutorial, starting with this post, where some individuals apparently needed to add GitHub to NoScript's "Anti-XSS Protection Exceptions" list in order to install uBO from GitHub or download the xpi.

It didn't affect all NoScript users across the board; I know I tried it out and had no trouble at all installing from GitHub with NoScript and XSS Protection active, without adding GitHub as an exception. But some people it seems did have trouble with it.

No problem installing it here.
This is the current release: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases/tag/firefox-legacy-1.16.4.8

That message will appear if you have set the browser to warn you upon add-on installation
(Preferences > Security > Add-ons / "Warn me when sites try to install add-ons").

Just click "Allow" to proceed.

That's the last WebExtension update, not the Legacy one. Unless someone make the effort and create a XUL fork and backport all the new features from the WebExt version then the answer to your question is and always will be...likely Never!

A flaw in this ad blockers version build can execute malicious code...
there is few security issue now with this legacy 1.16.4.10 build and we need the last version because some code can do bad things

uBlock Origin is not affected.

This is indicated even in the mentioned article:
Il recommande l’utilisation de l’extension uBlock Origin, qui n’intègre par l’option « $rewrite ».

I just installed it from:

https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/relea ... er=1.18.10

So I only had to go to the second page.

In the long run, though, would it be possible to somehow simplify installation of ublock origin?

I no longer use firefox and never (seriously) used adChromium; being able to filter away irrelevant content from potentially
malicious actors is important for me, so that I can get work done quickly (it is not problem when I install ublock origin,
but on a fresh linux setup I often don't have neither palemoon nor ublock origin installed, which is why I am posting
right now )
