How to install uBlock Origin in Pale Moon 27

Unread post by gracious1 » 2017-08-31, 11:41

Raymond Hill's enormously popular uBlock Origin now comes in three editions: Web Extensions, XUL ("legacy" or "full add-on"), and hybrid. The edition made available at the Mozilla' Add-on Site (AMO) is either pure Web Extensions or hybrid. Pale Moon 27, however, requires the XUL or "full add-on" edition. So here is how to fetch and download the correct edition for Pale Moon 27.

1. Go to the uBlock Origin Releases page at GitHub (a version-control repository and Internet hosting site).https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases

2. Scroll down until you see the label "Latest Release" in green letters. It should look something like this:
Image
3. Now we install the extension.
a. Look the right, under Downloads, and you will see links that look like uBlock0.<something>.xpi .
b. Look for the one with firefox in the name (oh, the irony). This is the XUL edition that will properly function in Pale Moon.
c. Click on this link. Click "Allow" if prompted by a pop-up.

4. Now look in your Add-ons Manager. You should see uBlock Origin installed with the beloved Blue Dot.

Nice work!

Do you use noscript? If so add github into exceptions on advanced XSS settings

That will allow you to install 1.13.8, which is fine if you want to stay with that version. But if you want the latest version that is compatible with Pale Moon, you have to get it from GitHub, not from Mozilla any longer.

For example, the most recent release as I write this is version 1.14.2, and this is what you want (not the link at AMO):
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/relea ... irefox.xpi
That will get you the pure XUL (or "legacy" or "full add-on") uBlock.
And you will know you are successful when you see the the correct version number and the blue dot in your Add-ons Manager:

Try this alternative:
3. Download the software bundle for installation:
a. Look the right, under Downloads, and you will see links that look like uBlock0.<something>.xpi .
b. Look for the one with firefox in the name (oh, the irony). This is the XUL edition that will properly function in Pale Moon.
c. Right-click on the link and select "Save Link As…" (or "Save Link Target As…") to download and save to disk.

4. Install the extension:
a. In Add-ons Manager, pull down "gear" menu and select "Install Add-on from File"
b. Select the uBlock0.firefox.xpi file you downloaded.

5. Now look in your Add-ons Manager. You should see uBlock Origin installed with the beloved Blue Dot.

So I tried to white list Github like you said but this is all I see. Am I missing something?

I tried adding Githubs site to this list but got the same issue.
I finally just disabled it for that download and then re-enabled it.

But would like to know how to do this.

The XSS exception is not working for me. First I put in "github.com" That didn't work. So then I put the up arrow in front of it as I noticed all other entries had one. Still didn't work. Then I added "https://" as once again I noticed all other entries had it; still didn't work. Finally I put a * at the end hoping that would work. But it didn't. Anyone know why it's not working for me?

One final step to add: Once you have installed uBlock Origin, you may want to install JustOff's handy uBlock Origin Updater. This restores the automatic update functionality lost due to the changes at Mozilla.

You can also just drag and drop the file onto the extensions window. I manually install both themes and extensions by drag and drop all the time. I like to keep backup copies of the installers, so I download them first.

Raymond Hill has now moved the XUL ("legacy or "full add-on") edition of uBlock Origin to a distinct branch, updated separately from the main branch. So now when you wish to install uBlock Origin you must use the file uBlock0.firefox-legacy.xpi . Do not use uBlock0.firefox.xpi because that is now the name of the WebExtension package.

You can see this in the first release of the new branch:
uBlock Origin 1.16.4

I will be composing a new tutorial with all-new instructions to reflect this change.
