Is there a way to read only new posts/responses since the last visit or user set time?

In effect, is it necessary to manually scroll to the end of the thread which was tagged as new by 'View new posts' ?

Help appreciated. Some threads are long!

Yes.
Just click upstairs " View unread posts"

This is what he does, as he says.
But this only shows in which threads there are new posts present.
There's no possibility to jump to the first new post in the thread.

From the new post results, only the topics with an icon left of the title have unread posts - clicking on that icon should take you to the first unread post in that topic (hover the mouse pointer over the icon > View first unread post).

You can configure to list newest posts first, which I do and it works great. Also using the button works.

That icon to the left of the post title (red with a blue dot) works perfectly.

Jumps to first unread message which is new to me.

Go to the thread and click "First unread post" top-right. this will jump to the first post in that thread you haven't read yet.
