Not strange at all. It is not meant for that "Private DNS" section.

Actually, nowhere in the configuration settings is dns.palemoon.org mentioned.

That's because specifying a dns server by name doesn't work. You need dns to resolve the hostname, to get the address for the dns server. That would be a chicken and egg problem.

I also don't know what "Private DNS" is, exactly, but it wouldn't suprise me if that is DoH, and not normal DNS?

Should be a generic naming convention for encrypted DNS, in the Android network settings. I believe Android currently only supports DoT at the OS level.

Now, the "Private/Secure DNS" setting in Android browsers could very well be DoH.

It's DoT and available since Android 9: https://vpnac.org/knowledgebase/128/DNS ... oid-9.html

I don't think there's a system-wide native (i.e. not requiring a VPN wrapper when not rooted) setting for DoH in Android yet, or at least AFAICS...

Private DNS in android is for encrypted DNS. it only works with providers that have DoT.

You can use pale moon's DNS in your saved network's settings, by changing "IP settings" from DHCP to static, and then enter the IP address(es) of the DNS server in the DNS 1 and DNS 2 lists.

For testing which DNS servers are fastest from your location, several tools exist including DNSBenchmark from GRC.
