Unread posts requires login

Post by biopsin » 2025-07-13, 16:41

Hi,
noticed the "Unread posts" now requires me to login to read them any spesific reason for this change?

Have a nice day.

Well, how can the system classify a post as "unread" (or "new") if one is not logged in ?
What is unread for one user may be already read for another user !

I've had to make a configuration change to reduce the amount of data stored for guest sessions. With the increase in bot traffic, non-logged-in sessions were inflating the site's internal administration with tons of new guest sessions, each adding another database entry to track read/unread status for posts causing pretty high server load (as some may have noticed with search being temporarily unavailable, etc.).

I do have the option to stop tracking this server-side entirely and store it in a local cookie, but that would be a bigger inconvenience IMHO for people visiting from multiple systems.

If you do have an account, I just recommend you mark the option to "stay logged in" and you'll have your read/unread status of posts preserved in your forum account.

The above is how I use linux Pale Moon in both MX Linux and Debian distros and it works for read/unread status of posts.
MX Linux 25 (Infinity) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox
Linux Debian 13.2 (Trixie) Xfce w/Pale Moon, Waterfox, Firefox

The login only ruins it for my mobile rss feeder, but I can live without this;)
Thanks for the response.

phpBB does allow HTTP authentication for feeds, but it's disabled currently (might actually be default). I could enable that if you're willing to test it and let me know if it works as-intended. It... should be safe enough over TLS with our settings to not leak credentials.

EDIT: never mind, that authorization is only to give access to boards you'd otherwise not be able to see. There's no option this way to have read/unread be preserved for feeds as they are by nature anonymous sessions, AFAICT.

Nah the client does not support authentication so will leave it for now, thank you anyways.
