Repo registration restricted

Post by Moonchild » 2024-09-28, 22:25

To combat trolling/spamming of vulgarities, new repo account registrations can no longer self-confirm and will have to be manually activated by an administrator for the time being.
Considering the trolling content, I suspect this will remain the case until at least the US elections and transition of government have concluded.

I apologise if your inbox exploded with vulgar notification e-mails. It's being mitigated.

If you'd like to expedite your account activation, let me know (in this thread, via PM, or other ways of contact you may be privy to)

They're posting political spam in the repo instead of here?

The forum here requires manual approval from moderators for new users' posts before they get published, so it's a lot more difficult to spam here (only the moderators would get annoyed).

Would've been nice if Gitea had that option too... :coffee:

They tried on the forum too, this time. It went nowhere, of course. Unfortunately Gitea doesn't have that option, but at least account registration can be gatekept.
Bonus is too that SEO spammers won't have an easy time getting in and trying to abuse it (as they have been).

athenian200's Epyrus repo needs to be scrubbed clean too, the spam issues are still up.

Ugh. Well, that's scrubbed too, now. Takes only seconds, thankfully.

Seems to have beef with Ted Cruz (whom IIUC is a Texas politician?) and it's been ramping up as political tensions in the USA have ramped up... So I can only guess it's politically motivated. I'll spare you the all-caps topics but needless to say it centres around political figures, some others in the news, and is without fail a bunch of homosexual vulgarities often also naming devs involved in our project by handle/name. Thankfully Gitea has a "purge" option to immediately remove all comments on existing issues by a user, but new issues need to be scrubbed (I understand the decision by Gitea devs to not include those in the purges, although it would be nice if that was an option too, e.g. if no other activity was present on the issues yet...)

I'm honestly not sure what this person's problem is. :D Clearly needs to take his/her medication or get some therapy to function at a more normal social level. I have pity for them, but really, what do they expect would happen here, other than preventing them from doing it again/too often? Being vulgar doesn't bother me, at least, but it's obviously not socially acceptable in a broader context.

Anyway, we'll respond to further attempts at being disruptive appropriately. And if they are reading this thread, they should be aware they aren't as anonymous as they think they are, no matter if they use Tor/proxies ;)

That Neocities spyware reference page author had a beef with Pale Moon for blocking forum registration via TOR. This only shows how sensible that decision was.

Yeah, I thought it was odd too. I have had this issue on the Basilisk repo as well.

Generally the repo issues relate to Ted Cruz's supposed homosexual relationships, although RFK Jr. and Moonchild (whom I did not realize was actually a US politician) have also been mentioned.

The forum software I wrote has an "obliterate spambot" feature for the staff which does exactly that.

Yeah, that guy spammed really fast.

I mean... what does he expect us to do about those kinds of things, anyway? I think the first time I saw some of the spam (a couple years ago), I just got confused and marked the issues as "WONTFIX" because I genuinely don't know how we would fix these things... or even if we should fix them. I also just started marking them as "DUPLICATE" after a while because he kept using the same title over and over. I think it would be safe to say that those issues are outside the scope of our project. We're neither licensed relationship counselors nor law enforcement officials, and thus cannot really do anything about the kind of issues he was bringing up.
