Was this regularly scheduled? It had come as a surprise to me; I would like to know where the announcement I had missed is if so. How do you lot expect me to have a social life?

It was? Heh. Must've been while I was asleep last night. 8-)

In my central time zone, the Forum was down in the afternoon. No big deal for me. I just moved on to another website forum which I'm a member of, Jamboards.

Forum maintenance isn't strictly planned ahead of time like that. I often do standard irregular maintenance when there is little activity but in general ad hoc unless I expect many hours of downtime. There are no announcements for brief maintenance periods.
You'll just have to check back an hour or so later.
