Why are threads getting locked all the time?

Unread post by jb_wisemo » 2022-05-18, 05:22

I see a lot of threads being locked, not just ones I have been involved in.

Is there some rule that threads are locked after a certain time or some other strange reason that threads are locked with no explicit explanation at the bottom of each locked thread?

Most notably the following old thread by Moonchild himself about when to lock threads has been locked for no apparent reason, despite stating that "We'll be leaving this thread open": viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12697

Old threads get automatically locked, and the ones that were queries can be marked as solved by the poster, after which (I think) they also get locked.

There's one problem with this. Some extension authors, create threads as their "official support thread" for that extension. When these get locked, it's impossible to ask a question or continue discussion about that extension.

Perhaps these could be made "unlockable", unless a replacement/fork exists or the author has abandoned the extension? Even so, further discussion should be possible, even after prolonged inactivity.

For support threads, one might think to open a new one say every year, putting the year in the title (e.g "Pinco Panco Extension [2022]"). I've seen this practice on other forums though for different purposes.

Yes, that looks awful though and potentially useful older information will be scattered over locked threads about the same subject.

Hopefully, it shouldn't require too much work to mark certain threads as "official", "support thread" or whatever.

Tell me about it :(
All my extensions have a corresponding support thread here, the support URL on their page points to it. Since they are all well mature at this point, I've been unable to update the threads if I release a new version with a minor fix/change after several months.

For support topics under the Add-ons board, you can request me or one of the other moderators to re-open it if it was closed due to inactivity. With that said, I've unlocked all the support topics for your add-ons.

If this causes too many issues, I can change the policy here and no longer auto-lock.
be aware that just unlocking a thread will have it re-lock in the next scheduled "locking window" because it is based on latest activity/latest post.
The problem is that in the past having all open threads would cause people to necro-post and (re)start discussions about topics that were completely irrelevant to the state of Pale Moon today.

My suggestion: in the Add-ons Forum, create a special "Extension support" sub-section with no auto-lock policy. Only "official" support would go there i.e. topics exclusively created by extension authors. It'd be easier to control, and you won't have to disable auto-lock for the entire forum if you don't want to (personally, I prefer necro-posting to locked/multiple threads but that's just me).

If this sounds good, I'd be happy to go over all extensions currently in the Add-ons Site (unless there's a quicker, internal way to find them) and report those that link to a support thread in the forum, so they can be moved in that section and unlocked, if required.

I second that. When i published my fork of FLST i wanted to suggest that release/support threads should be moved to dedicated subforum to not mix with general extension questions and question about specific legacy extensions.
Also may i suggest that same(dedicated subforum) to be done with threads about extension development? I'd make easier looking if development question was already discussed/answered.

Is this why the choice to edit past posts disappears soon after posting? Sometimes, I can spot a mistake I have made in one of my recent posts, but it is too late for me to amend it with the right information. I do not like leaving the false information up, but am powerless to right it.

Auto-locking threads and time window to edit posts sound totally unrelated.

I assume you cannot edit forever, to avoid transforming messages at will, at any time. Even after others have posted. Makes sense. You should really verify your posts before and/or right after posting!

In case of a rare, clamorous past error, you can always quote yourself and correct it.

I've created a sub board under Add-ons that has no auto-lock policy with appropriate rules for creating new topics.

Thanks!

I've split the stuff for themes out into their own sub board, just to keep things organized.

EDIT: extensions moved across and threads unlocked.
