Unread post by Stargate38 » 2022-01-05, 19:01

As you can see in my screenshot, I can't search forum.palemoon.org anymore. Please fix it immediately. People have a right to use Google to search this site. :x

Absolute BS!! A site does not have to adapt to Google.

Really now? And what bestows that right upon them or upon Google?

If you want to search the forum, use the forum's search facilities.

I'm just saying that people should be allowed to choose whatever search engine they want, instead of having to use the built-in search. I don't know of any other public, guest-viewable forum on the entire Internet that blocks any search engine, especially the big ones. I did find the specific code in your Robots.txt, though:

Code: Select all

User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /
By putting that in there, you're preventing people who've never visited this site from finding existing posts that are relevant to their search. Please remove that code from your Robots.

I beg to differ. Search is offered. And as a forum operator I decide which third party gets to benefit from the content on it, if any. And since Google has tried to actively censor this forum when we were still running adsense to offset the costs for running it, they don't get to index it and benefit from the monetization they enjoy on it.

No.
If you want to search, use the forum search. If you want to discover posts from a search engine on the web, use one that isn't Google or uses Google.
May I suggest our default search engine? https://duckduckgo.com/?t=palemoonsp&q= ... org&ia=web

If you won't restore the Google index, then please fix your internal search engine: Searching for "twitch.tv videos won't play" (this is just an example) results in the search page ignoring all punctuation, and the resulting search is "twitch tv videos won t play", with text underneath that saying "ignored: tv t". As a result, I can't search properly, and I'm sure others have noticed as well.

So rare to see someone say "NO" to Google and their private data harvesting and their mass surveillance agency bedfellows. Another great reason to support this project.

You can go and try to bug phpBB devs about their implementation of search engine in their forum software. I'm curious how that will play out :)
