Forum planned downtime

Unread post by Admin » 2020-09-19, 13:19

We'll be taking the forum down for extended database maintenance and front-end updates on Sunday, September 20th 2020, probably around 10:00 UTC (but it may be earlier or later). Expected downtime is at least a couple of hours.

This will make the forum inaccessible for the duration for everyone, and will most likely log you out if you have a persistent login session.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.

After a smooth maintenance session we're back. You may notice some slight style changes on the forum (hopefully for the better!). The Forest theme also has been given a once-over to align colors to the green spectrum better.

After the latest maintenance session, the site does not open properly.
The forum’s main page address is index.php, but now it shows the following notification:

One can open the main page through changing the link from index.php to https://forum.palemoon.org/.

Works fine, just refresh the page.

It should work without having to refresh the page, as usual.
However, now it opens correctly. It might have been some temporary glitch.

You mean the website should be able to override your browser's cache? Ok then.

You mean the browser generates cache by itself, not based on the website data? OK then.

Cool, I didn't know the browser was expected to fetch the new page every femtosecond and ignore the cache sans a refresh. But of course this is 'as usual', whatever you meant by that. Now go whine about it on r/palemoon.

Of course, after being logged, clicking a link on the site should render the updated page. I refreshed the page myself and then saw this discussion. Refreshing the page in this scenario may be understandable, but please don't generalize.

Don't make me have to hand out cooldowns.
Moonbat, please don't encourage the segregation towards reddit for people with (heated) disagreements. It's already bad enough as it is.

I will look into adding some cache-control variables next time on the off-line page so a manual refresh should not be necessary.

Not encouraging, but I've seen it as a common trend. There was a snarky one in response to the forum thread where Tobin acknowledged RealityRipple's mirror of MDN, for example.

Ah, my preferred theme!

Thanks for the update, Mr. Admin. It's looking good.

Respectfully, my friend: I've noticed that the most frazzled users of these forums (and those with the least patience for goofy-but-well-intentioned newbie questions that sometimes pop up here) are those who frequent the Pale Moon subreddit.

It might do you good to avoid going there, at least for a while. I think that that subreddit might make those who read it be a bit jaded.

Browser caching can be a tricky mess. There's lots of ways to accomplish it, and most involve setting a static amount of time before even contacting the server to check for a change. If you don't, then every request talks to the server, if only to get a 304-not-modified because the etags match.

It's not that tricky. Just add a cache-control with a limited time to every response and it will re-request after that time. An offline page shouldn't be cached for too long, if at all.

For the record, it appears the database updates and stuff erased my post signature and my group status.

I'm not angry at that; I just noticed it. Besides, I put it all back.
