is it really practical to set "foes"?
I just looked at my profile settings, and noticed users can set other users as "foes," which will make those users invisible to them. This is the first forum I've ever seen that offers that option. I've thought for years that such an option would be an ideal way to avoid the annoyance of rude and overbearing users (not "trolls"--those can be dealt with more easily). But I also thought, would making other users invisible be practical? If the other users have posted any responses integral to the conversation, rendering them invisible could render a thread incomprehensible. In light of this possibility, is labeling someone a foe something to "do at your own risk"?
Or have I simply misunderstood how setting foes works?

Not being able to follow conversations is the price to pay to avoid harmful users. But the conversation probably wouldn’t be interesting in the first place, anyway…
Also thank you for talking about this; I tried again to add someone to my foes list and this time it worked! I hope I won’t read anything from them ever again.

Practical or not, it's up to the user to decide.
BTW, many forums offer this option.

If a "foe" posts to a thread, you will be able to see that he/she has a post, but you won't see it. There will be a "show" button if you think it's pertinent. At least that's how it works on other forums (this isn't the only forum with this feature).
Re: is it really practical to set "foes"?
I have run into the same issue before and just had to use the "show" button
when I wanted to see what that person said. So that being said, I got real tired
of that process and simply removed the person from the list. In the end, I found
that it simply did not work when working on a revolving and moving thread.
You see the response and then wonder what the heck was said and have to go
back and show the person you blocked.

it's useful for those people who get triggered easily by certain individuals, and initially hiding the text posted can prevent those people from getting the unstoppable urge to reply with a hot head when they should not.
It's fully under your control. If it works for you, it works. If it doesn't, then don't use it.
Also, all fora running phpBB (which is many!) have this option; unless the administrator explicitly disabled it.

Off-topic:
Maybe we could have sticky for foe stats:
All time greatest foes:
Greatest foes, this week:
Greatest foes, this month:
Might even have a 'Sensitive types' popup that appears prior to allowing access.
(I wonder how many foe lists I am included in?)
(Thinking it's going to be at least 1 more then when I posted this .)
(Wonder if that's why I'm never invited to the party?)

Code: Select all
What is your sensitivity level?
Block all time foes?
Block this weeks greatest foes?
Block this months greatest foes?

@therube ... so you really want to create a hateful atmosphere with massive abuse potential?
