browsers extension compatibility

I want to develop my own extension. But i would like that the extension work on different browser (firefox, chrome, safari, edge...)

developed Extensions are compatible with different browser or not?

According to developers feedbacks, i heart that there is many developed extensions worked only on firefox and only on version 38.

Is it true? can you confim me that?
