Pdf extension not working with PM v26

Post by wsn90 » 2016-02-23, 01:55

One of my very favorite and often-used extensions, https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/print-pages-to-pdf/ v0.1.9.3.1, has stopped working with PM v26.

I have not been able to find a similar Pdf creator that is free, does not send content over the internet, and can create a single Pdf of multiple tabs.

It still works with PM 25.8.1 though

I'm using the Atom build for XP. I wonder if I now need an additional extension like Firebug :?:

First if no one else has said it. Welcome to Pale Moon.

Now that being said, your going to be in for a big BIG disappointment  . I am probably the biggest user of this particular add-on as I use it sometimes up to 20 times a day. It is truly the most used add-on in my arsenal. A few months ago I ran into a problem while testing a Linux Distro and found out that this particular Add-on author has his own web site at http://printpdf.pf-control.de/index.php/en/help.html and he removed his add-on from the FF site. But the big problem with his site is that one, there is no way to contact him as I can tell. Two, he only offers the latest version from this site even though he shows the others in the list (no download buttons). And the latest version is a no go with Pale Moon (formatting issues). So (thank God) had a older version (0.1.9.3) in my old profile and was able to recover it so I could use it in Pale Moon 25.8.1 Atom/WinXP

I am at this point still using the above mentioned version of Pale Moon for this reason and some others. I simply cannot do without this add-on and there seems to be no way to get hold of the Author to see if he/she would be interested in making it work with Pale Moon. As stated in many replies by Moonchild. They simply do not have the resources to work on add-on's as their hands are full.

The sad part here is that there is simply no other add-on like it, anywhere.....

So it's a hard choice. Continue to upgrade to newer versions of Pale Moon and lose some of my favorite add-on's or simply stay put. For me the choice has been made for now.

I may have a look it later today. By not working, do you mean that the addon doesn't work at all? Have you tried older versions of the addon with Pale Moon 26?

So whose is the add-on site on AMO? There is a support email link on the AMO page.

Handyman,
Thanks for the warm welcome :)

jumba,
Up until about Summer 2015, when it disappeared from the mozilla site, version 0.1.9.3.1 was available and it worked with PM 25.

After that only a buggy, later version 5 was available via the author's webpage (which also contained a message saying that someone in the mozilla addons department had pulled his extension because of some minor compliance issue).

Recently mozilla made v 0.1.9.3.1 available again,
https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/addon/print-pages-to-pdf/,
and the above mentioned message on the author's webpage has been removed.

Both available versions ( v 01931 at mozilla, and v 5 at author's website http://printpagestopdf.hol.es/index.php/en/installation.html ) cause PM 26 to crash & close when they attempt to "print to pdf" on my system.

I opened an issue on the issue tracker and reported my findings there. You can see my report in Issue #378

 Awesome, I sure hope this can be fixed. Still could not see any contact info for this author. I must be blind. :problem:

The issue report got an answer, you can read it there. But in short, it wont be fixed.

The remaining options are
- to contact the developer requesting to make the add-on compatible with Pale Moon 26.
- to fork the add-on.
- to look for an alternative solution.

If it's just the platform version breaking an add-on and neither the add-on's author nor anyone else will fix it one can still use the checkCompatibility add-on that disables the compatibility check (use at your own risk as some add-ons may disable themselves under specific versions on purpose).

That is not going to help, dave. The platform version in Firefox is the version number of Gecko. In Pale Moon 26 this is now a version number of Goanna. This change of one version number is the reason why the addon doesn't work any more. Silly isn't it?

It is "printpagestopdf@yahoo.de". Looking to the right of "About this Add-on" on the AMO page is "Add-on home page", and in that list of links is "Support E-mail".

It's working fine for me though?

In what aspect? The issue is not about the add-on compatibility check.

Ok so this is what I sent to the Author of Printpagestopdf

Hello to you. I am an avid user of your printpagestopdf and have been using it for almost 3 years. But about year and half ago I simply could not handle the direction FF was going and had to find something else. That something else turned out to be https://www.palemoon.org/ For the last couple of years it has been a branch off of FF and I never had any trouble with your add-on working as it should. But last month Pale Moon has changed their engine from Gecko to Goanna and runs into a platform version problem
as stated in thishttps://github.com/MoonchildProductions/Pale-Moon/issues/378 Github page

My question to you, is if you could find it in your heart to fix this issue? I and many other PM users use your add-on many many times a day
and this has kept me from upgrading to the latest version of PM.

Perhaps you would be interested in supporting PM with your add-on. My understanding at this point is that this is a very simple fix but must be made on your end.

I thank you for your time and look forward to your reply.

I now wait for his/her response. I will let you all know what I hear.

We are already pursuing this front. If no response we MAY fork it. Depends on whomever from the add-ons team takes it on.. If it does happen.

We will have to see so please be patient.
How far are you prepared to go? How much are you prepared to risk? How many people are you prepared to sacrifice for victory?
Are you willing to die friendless, alone, deserted by everyone? Because that's what may be required of you in the war that is to come.

So here is the response I received from the Author of Printpagestopdf and it seems like good news to me. I'm pretty sure the Pale Moon team has also received this email and I am super excited to see this. I look forward to updates.

Hello,

sorry, haven't had time to look at this, but I planned to do this. But I see a major problem; I am "locked out" by one guy from the Mozilla AMO Team. Since more than one year I try to get new Versions applied by the AMO Team, but this is always rejected by Chris Maglione so I am not able to get new versions signed.
I assume that palemoon in actual Version although requests signed AddOns isn't it?

Second is, that I had to test it, because it contains binary content, that is accessed by the C Interface and it must be checked if the 64-bit Palemoon interacts correct with my binary.

Regards,
Reinhold

I've been using this forever
http://freepdfxp.de/index_en.html

Hey they have English page now, it used to be all in German :)

This stuff is awesome, you can also combine multiple PDFs into one...etc I'm not sure if the compression is great but it's free anyways and no spywares YAY

Has anybody heard from the author yet? It's been a couple of weeks and seems like a simple fix. Just wondering! :problem:
