[Solved] Java plugin & other Catch-22s

If I go to http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp, I get a message saying that I need to install the Java plug-in.

The problem is that the latest Java Runtime Environment is already installed on my Windows 8 64-bit system.

When I click on “Install plugin…”, I am told that it could not be installed by Pale Moon, I should install it manually. But I have already done so.

How can I get out of this Catch-22?

I have “Warn me when closing multiple tabs” off in the Pale Moon options. I am still getting warning messages whenever I close several tabs with the “Close other tabs” right-click command.

How can I get out of this other Catch-22?

Hi Robert, not sure about your specific W8/Java/site problem, I gave up on W8 when it was still in Beta. (There is a Flash-based test linked from your page, http://www.auditmypc.com/broadband-speed-test.asp but I found it very inaccurate.)

But, if that's the only reason you have Java installed, uninstall it (or at least disable the Java plugins from the browsers once tested), there are many Flash-based speed testers now, for example: http://www.speedtest.net/ and http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html (also has download test files). There's also a YouTube video streaming test page where you can see the live throughput data: http://www.youtube.com/my_speed

Even after Oracle's latest Java 'patch' (within the last day or so), they're still investigating 5 other vulnerabilities, one of which is known to be actively exploited 'in the wild': http://thenextweb.com/insider/2013/03/0 ... -the-wild/

I suspect the ability to turn off the warning on closing multiple tabs only applies to closing the active browser window. I get the same result as you in Firefox and in Pale Moon - maybe this is an option that could be added by Moonchild but it may be easier to find an Add-on.

I'm afraid I don't have a direct solution for Java. If you have a 64-bit installer for Java, it should include the plugin for gecko type browsers. Make sure the installer you have includes support for 64-bit.

As for your warning message, set browser.tabs.warnOnCloseOtherTabs to false in about:config

I downloaded and installed the 64-bit version of the Java Runtime Environment. This did the trick.
And so did changing “browser.tabs.warnOnCloseOtherTabs” from True to False in about:config.
Problems solved!
