27.1.0 64-bit, address bar stops repainting while typing URL

Unread post by Trysdyn » 2017-02-17, 00:25

First of all, I've been using PM for months and appreciate all the work the devs have put into it. <3

Anyway, odd problem that appeared after my 27.0.3 -> 27.1.0 upgrade. When I begin typing a URL into the address bar, the address bar will stop repainting itself once the history/suggestion dropdown appears. For example: if I begin typing "reddit.com", once I type "re", the suggestions appear and the address bar stops showing further input. The suggestion dropdown continues to change, and if I type on and hit return it'll go to the right place, so it's purely a visual bug.

Things I've tried so far...
  • Safe mode
  • Clearing EVERYTHING via Privacy->Clear All History (This helped until suggestions populated the dropdown again, then the problem returned)
  • A new profile (Same as above)
  • Toggling hardware acceleration (Does nothing, didn't think it would)
I'm on Win10 Home, up to date, with PM 27.1.0 64-bit upgraded from 27.0.0 -> 27.0.3 -> 27.1.0 via chocolatey. Troubleshooting info block at the bottom of the post.

I'm unsure where to go from here for troubleshooting/reporting. Any help? I'm willing to provide more data if it'll help.

I am running on Win10 Pro, I have not seen this issue.

You are in the correct place to find an answer.

Possibly you could show screen shot or video of the issue.

Sure thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WabvUZ0bAhs

It looks like my initial description of the issue was wrong. The repaints seemed to get deferred on a new tab. Once the tab's been alive for a bit it stops happening. Sorry for the confusion.

It's not working :) It's just a different broken.

In the video it works once or twice but once I begin to backspace the URL, it won't repaint those changes to the address bar. After about 5 seconds it will eventually "Catch up".

It looks like the entire browser has hanged, but it hasn't. It's still responsive, it's just the address bar. Strange.

Does it only happen with a specific theme?
Which extensions do you have installed? (In specific, any which alter the url bar look/behaviour)
Have you tried with all extensions disabled?

It happens regardless of theme or extension. It has happened in safe mode and with a new profile.

You might need to remove all the files, folders and unstall PM

Restart windows machine.

Reinstall PM

Well, I uninstalled and moved the Moonchild Productions dirs from Local and Roaming, then did a reinstall and it's working now, even after restoring my profile so... [?????]

I'm gonna blame sunspots I guess.

I would assume that it was a corrupted install or upgrade the first time with your windows 10 home.

Hope that it continues to work with your system.

I'm running 27.3.0 32-bit (up to date) now, and have had the same inconsistent problem for a while. Sometimes typing into the URL bar works fine until there is an auto suggestion, then only the autosuggestion shows. But, if I keep typing, once I press Enter, what I typed appears. Usually, there is no cursor in the URL bar and my typing into the URL bar does not appear until I press Enter. Sometimes the bar is blank, sometimes the URL of the tab I am re-using just sits there. I have to type blind.
I have just tried unchecking everything in the Tools/Options/Privacy/Location Bar list. At first that didn't seem to help, then it did start to let me type in. (I have not restarted Pale Moon.) I have downloaded the install file, in case I need to try re-installing.
This is a Win7-32 system so I can run vital 16-bit FoxProDOS applications.
