Can't install 64 bit Pale Moon on 64 bit vista SP2.

Post by Lassar » 2016-12-12, 19:14

I am using 64 bit vista SP2.

Trying to install palemoon-27.0.2.win64.installer.exe

It complains saying "This version of PaleMoon requires Microsoft Windows Vista x64 or newer."

So how can I get it to install?

What gives?

I can verify this, on 64-Bit Vista Home Premium. 27.0.2 x64 will not install, 26.5.0 x64 installs okay.

If I install 26.5.0 x64 and update to 27.0.2, everything on the screen is garbled after the update is installed.

Pale Moon 27.0.2 32-Bit will install on Vista 64-Bit and works okay...

32bit version installs on Vista SP2 but 64 bit version does not even on 64 bit Vista SP2.

Looks like the installer module in the platform code got changed by Mozilla to exclude 64-bit Vista. bug #1093741
With the platform update, this also came across to our code base.
Easy fix, but obviously not in the current release installers.

As a workaround, use the ZIP packed files to install.

Moonchild, I think there is more to this than just the installer.

If I install Pale Moon 26.5.0 x64 on Vista x64, then update to Pale Moon 27.0.3 x64 through the update process (Help -> About Pale Moon -> Check for Updates) it will download and update Pale Moon. But... after it is updated, the fonts are totally garbled. For example, if I go to the address bar and type "www.google.com", the letters type on top of each other - and it ends up being a one character garbled mess.

I downloaded Pale Moon 27.0.3 x64 Portable and tried it on Vista x64 - and it has the same problem with the fonts being garbled. Pale Moon 27.0.3 x86 Portable works properly on Vista x64, and everything is readable.

For what it's worth (and probably not related) Vista x64 will not allow me to install Silverlight x64 - it will only let me install Silverlight x86 for some reason.

An installation issue has nothing to do with an (obvious) rendering issue with fonts.
Off-topic:
So, off-topic, you're likely having an issue with your graphics driver or hardware acceleration. Try disabling direct2d in about:config (gfx.direct2d.disabled to true)

I'm really hopeful that Pale Moon will remain a true x64 option for Vista. All of the other browsers have quit the OS. I'm really interested to see if Moonchild's suggestion bear fruit.

Moonchild, I did not mean to "muddy the water" with a separate issue - I thought the problem I was having might be related to the installation issue. I apologize if I caused any problems or confusion...

You are correct that I am having a graphic driver problem. The graphic card I'm using is an ATI HD-3450, and it has the latest driver installed - that is available. Disabling Direct2D did correct the font problem - and after doing that PM 27.0.3 64-Bit works okay with Vista 64-Bit. I'm a bit perplexed why PM 27.0.3 32-Bit works properly on Vista 64-Bit with the HD-3450 graphic card, while PM 27.0.3 64-Bit has the font problem.

I'm not surprised -- especially if you are on older hardware using older drivers, you can easily run into driver immaturity. The 32-bit version will be using tried-and-tested drivers; the 64-bit version will use different drivers that may not have seen much use (and they are likely not going to be updated further).

By chance did this have anything to do with SSE2 support on the CPU being used? I know SeaMonkey is experiencing these sorts of issues right now. Just a thought.

Nope, this has nothing to do with SSE2 support, and everything to do with the platform update we did for v27 pulling in Mozilla's code change based on their decision "we're not going to support Vista x64". So it's something we didn't want that got log-rolled into the platform update. I'm sure we'll come across a good handful more of those things over time.

So just to be clear, will Vista x64 support be removed Moonchild?

No, quite the contrary.
Once more: It was an installer-scripting limitation that got slipped in with the platform. It has already been corrected in the tree and the installer will properly allow Vista again in 27.1.
