Cannot Start Portable on Windows 10

Unread post by dusink » 2018-08-20, 08:55

Hello, version 28, which I have just updated to, is not working on windows 10. Both 32 bit. When I start the palemoon-portable.exe, the welcome screen appears and that's all. On background, palemoon.exe is started, but all three processes are terminate soon without any notification why. When installing via update, it didn't restarted. When installing from download, windows 10 refused to run self-extracting archive, it was necessary to force it.

Any help, how to make it work?
Thanks, Dusin

Try with a new Profile.

You can do that rather easily, in a hack-ish way. Simply rename the (Pale Moon Portable) /User/ directory to something like /User.OLD/, then run Palemoon-Portable.exe. (That will automatically create a new, clean, User directory.)

(Backup first.
If that doesn't accomplish anything, simply remove that new User directory & rename User.OLD back to User & you should be back to where you started from, albeit, not running.)

I can confirm that this is happening on Windows 7 with the same error reports as above.

Imprivata OneSign Agent
See if disabling that (maybe you'll have to actually remove it to test, don't know?) changes anything?

Unfortunately, this is a corporate PC and I can't disable or remove anything.
Thanks for looking though.

I thought I was going to have to agree with frexd yesterday, because after a restart and rebuilding a new profile from the old, I had Pale Moon 28 running nicely.
But this morning, after another reboot, I'm getting nothing but a splash screen which disappears along with the application.
The crash report is largely the same as I posted earlier.

It's definitely a bit of a conundrum, and only seems to affect people on 32-bit operating systems (neither 64-bit nor 32-bit on 64-bit seem to be affected).

I've adjusted the build optimization on the unstable channel now, to see if that helps. if you're willing to give that a try and report back, that would be great.

Portables are available.

I have used the portable version since it was released on several 32bit Win7 pc's without any problems, so the 32bit OS is not the problem alone.

I gave the unstable a quick try and it seemed to be working until the perennial problem of our corporate anti-virus (Trend Micro OfficeScan) deciding that it didn't like the palemoon exe kicked in and it quarantined the files :wtf:

It's done this before and I usually wait a week after updates are announced to actually do the update. This seems to give Trend a chance to catch up.

In the meantime, I'll continue with 27.9.4 until a new refresh. Sorry I can't test any more.

Just a quick update. I downloaded 28.0.1 and so far it's working well (Trend hasn't spotted it yet...).

Just to re-iterate my setup. 32-bit Windows 7 enterprise on an ancient HP PC containing an Intel Core 2 Duo (thanks NHS).
