update pop-up (convenience)

Unread post by person45 » 2020-12-19, 04:32

Issue: After enabling "automatically install updates", there's a pop-up window that says the update is ready to install. It asks to "restart later" or "restart now".

Desire: For a hassle-free experience, I would prefer not being interrupted by the pop-up. I also prefer not having to make a mouse click to restart every time there's an update.

Request: Can you add an option for the user to pre-select "restart later" or "restart now" for all future updates in preferences?

No.

The current update flow is already a compromise between your convenience and software safety practices, and there's no pressing reason here to change that.

Also think for a minute about your suggestion: Pre-selecting either choice would be a negative influence on your experience. In the case of "restart now" you'd have to deal with a sudden and inexplicable browser shutdown and restart while you're in the middle of things (way worse than having the update window appear), and in the case of "restart later" you would not be made aware of an update that should be installed asap, and in fact you would be suspending it indefinitely (which goes against the whole premise of automatically installing updates as well as best practices regarding security updates).

Also: updates aren't a thing you'd have to deal with on more than a monthly basis. Is one click a month too much? :D
