[Solved] Pale Moon as default browser in Windows 8 64-bit

Post by Robert2 » 2013-02-15, 08:08

Hi,
I am running Pale Moon 64-bit on Windows 8 64-bit.
Pale Moon is registered as the default browser.
However, clicking on a URL outside Pale Moon brings up Internet Explorer 10 instead of Pale Moon.
Windows 8 does offer a choice of browsers to register as the system default browser (as imposed by the European Community), but Pale Moon is missing from that list of available browsers.
Is there a way to ensure that all clicked URLs end up being loaded in Pale Moon?
Thank you very much for any answser.
Robert

There should be a "default programs" control panel in Windows 8 somewhere (although I don't know off-hand where - I don't use Win 8 myself) where you can set Pale Moon as default program for all supported protocols and files. Make sure to not let IE steal the associations again by double-checking your internet options > programs

After some poking at a trial in a VM to help out:

Default programs in Windows 8:
  • Open desktop mode from the start mosaic
  • Pull open your right-hand side settings bar
  • Go to Settings (icon)
  • Go to "Control panel" (text link)
  • This will open your normal control panel view (as in Win 7) on the classic desktop
  • Now you have an entry "Default programs" where you can set Default actions/programs
(took me a moment to realize the settings panel was different on desktop than in the start panel - another reason to get confused about the Win 8 UI)

Thank you very much. Pale Moon is now my default browser for all URLs and file extensions it can open.
The Win 8 UI, and especially the Start menu can indeed be very confusing. But if you create a folder shortcut on your Desktop with this exact name:

All Settings .{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

then open that folder, you will gain access to all the possible system settings of Windows 8. This is a kind of Supercharged Control Panel. It is known as Windows "God Mode".

Note that the folder name must be entered AS IS, and cannot be changed.

HTH.
Cheers,
Robert

It's still not much quicker with "god mode" (overstated name, looking at what's in it - most of those are normal settings you'd find in administrative tools/control panel/accessories/ just everything slapped into a single list) - in fact, it took me more time because of the size of the list with nondescript icons to find the proper setting ;)
You still have to switch to desktop first, then, open the folder, and then scroll through the long list that's not in any way sorted logically (just alphabetically by category)...

In any case, that is better talked about in "Technical Chat" if you want to state/discuss it further. Considering your problem here solved ;)
