SOLVED: x64 15.4.1 crashes when Radeon Pro is running.

Post by VenomouS » 2013-02-06, 01:03

Just as the title states, x64 15.4.1 will instantly crash - WITHOUT REPORT - when I have Radon Pro (tried with both stable & dev preview) running in the background. Also, Radeon Pro will not launch when Palemoon is running in the background... strange indeed. Still happens when i disable all plugins, including flash. This did not happen to me with previous versions of Palemoon, such as 15.3.x ...I wonder, is there is some sort of GPU acceleration issue here?

Here are my specs in case it may be related to hardware/os/driver...
Windows 7 Pro SP1 + all released updates to date installed
ASUS P8Z68-V/Gen3
Core i5 2500k @4.5 1.35v
8GB Mushkin DDR3-1600 8-9-8-24 1.55v
2x XFX 2GB 6950 Crossfire (both unlocked - but not overclocked - to 6970) Catalyst 13.1
SyncMaster 27B550 1920x1080 forced to 72Hz <---does the same at 60Hz, so I don't think it's this...

I beat the hell out of my system with various stress testing utilities, and its rock solid - not to mention i don't have issues with any other app(s) - so I don't think it is related to overclocking/gpu unlocking issues... as I stated, i never had a problem before. I'm hoping that someone else can verify this issue.
Really don't want to have to go back to 15.3, but I might...

Any advice is welcome, thanks! ~VenomouS~

An instant crash is usually not related to system stability, so I'm not surprised it comes up clean ;)

I'm not familiar with Radeon Pro, though, but yes, Pale Moon x64 is GPU accelerated and will use the 64-bit graphics driver in native mode (which is still slightly untested waters for driver vendors). If there is no report or actual appcrash, then there's likely something conflicting at the driver level, especially since you state that the utility will also not launch when Pale Moon is already running.

I've had a few issues myself with later catalyst drivers on my own HD6870 on Win7 x64, so 13.1 may possibly break something for older gen cards in x64. Try using a slightly older version like 12.10, and see if that makes any difference? I'm using that one myself without issues - same gen card as yours @HD6xxx

Thanks very much for your reply Moonchild! BTW, awesome work with Pale Moon!

After reading your post, I realized that I was messing with my RadeonPro settings the other day (right around the time that 15.4.1 came out) and remembered ticking a check box in RadeonPro for "64-bit" support. At the time, I assumed that it was for native 64-bit "application" support; but, soon realized after reading your post that it might be for 64-bit "driver" support. So, I closed Palemoon, started Rpro went into settings and "disabled 64-bit support"... and voilà, problem solved. Kinda feel  here lol....

Well, that was easy... Thanks for the help, ~VenomouS~

Thanks for mentioning that. 13-1_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe has been sitting in my download folder since last month. Every time I think of installing it, the Angel of Death appears and says, "Don't do that." 8-)

I'm currently with 12.10 and except for an occasional and not-too-annoying Desktop Window Manager crash, it's far more trouble-free and stable than the earlier versions on my XFX 7770. Even 12.4 & .6 were funky on my previous Gigabyte 6770. (i7-3770K on a Biostar Z77 Mobo.)

Even with that newer gen board, still I think I'll wait for 13.8. Hey, that rhymes...
