Embracing Liberapay for donations

Unread post by Moonchild » 2018-07-14, 11:40

We now accept donations for recurring support through Liberapay!

When this was pointed out to me by one of our users, it became clear that, for recurring payments and solid support, Liberapay is a much better match for Pale Moon than Patreon is. It is specifically focused on Free and Open projects like ours, is non-profit itself, doesn't take a cut from the donations and isn't actually designed for a "reward for money" setup like Patreon is.
Patreon is great for e.g. artists and other creators who can directly reward their patrons with tangible things like artwork, poetry, prose, videos, documents, etc. -- regularly offering exclusive content to their patrons. This isn't however, any sort of good match for the Pale Moon project or our work. Patreon was chosen initially because people asked for it; despite its relatively poor match and relatively high fees on donations (easily 10-12% in total).

With Liberapay, you'll have the same option to provide recurring support, with specific benefits like anonymity when donating, better transparency from our side, broader funding support, and the option to literally donate from a symbolic penny amount to a maximum of $100/week. They currently support most credit and debit cards (VISA and MasterCard), as well as bank wires (in euros) and direct debits (SEPA only). More options will be added in the future.

Our current Patreon patrons are of course welcome to continue using Patreon, although if it is an option, moving to Liberapay would be preferred for us.

Well, so much for poor timing!

It seems Liberapay is in trouble because their payment processor is kicking them out. More details in their blog post: https://medium.com/liberapay-blog/liberapay-is-in-trouble-b58b40714d82

To all Patrons who planned to move to Liberapay after my previous post: please hold your horses, as it won't be possible to properly handle donations until they have found a new payment processor.

Apologies for the confusion and short notice.
