PM loses connection

Unread post by Zorba » 2018-04-29, 08:57

Hi, I'm using PM 27.9.0 on three platforms: Win10 laptop, Win7 desktop and a Debian laptop. Everything is fine except on the Win10 system, where PM very frequently loses its connection to the internet after about 20 minutes.

A restart re-establishes the connection. Other browsers (Firefox) keep working while PM is stuck.

As mentioned, it only happens on the Windows 10 laptop, which is connected by Wifi. The Win7 machine is connected by LAN cable, but the Debian laptop is also on Wifi but doesn't seem to lose connection.

I can safely report that there is no problem regarding Wifi connections on Win7 machines either....

I don't think the issue has anything to do with Wifi, just trying to find anything that is different. May try with LAN cable or maybe the 32 bit PM on Win 10.

32 bit version is doing the same. Haven't tried cable yet as this will trigger uncontrolled Win10 updates...

Maybe you need to check the power saving mode for the wireless card (?)

It seems the problem has been mentioned before on a Win7 system,

no solution unfortunately.

Update: I had one Add-on installed called Cookies Exterminator. After disabling this there seem to be no more disconnections.

Apologies for not trying this earlier…

It does seem to happen with several different Add-ons though according to the other threads.

Thanks

I'm afraid you took a placebo, as CE can't be the reason for your issue.

Your results would presumably be coincidental -- I've been using Cookies Exterminator for many months and have no issues at any time as described.

I can concur, as I also have been using Cookies Exterminator 2.8.3 since PM 27 and have had no issues. :coffee:

To reproduce the issue, I recommend opening several tabs of non-Youtube video sites. Liveleak for me always has been a good candidate for triggering this bug.

It’s strange, I’ve now reactivated Cookies Exterminator (2.8.3), and the problem has so far not re-appeared.

The round CE button in the browser toolbar is gone, I can’t remember how I got it previously.

So, problem gone for now :?

Regarding the missing CE button -- you can go to "Customize" and place the button where you want it (right-click in empty area of toolbar and select "Customize" - you should see the CE button in the "Customize Toolbar" interface and be able to drag it to where you want it located in your toolbar ;)).

Found a website that seems to trigger connection loss: http://www.tvguide.co.uk/

leaving this open in a tab seems to get PM stuck loading anything else after some time. Hope this helps diagnose the problem.

I've had that site open on a W7 2008 Atom CPU x86/2GB machine for multiple weeks at a time, currently since before Pale Moon 27.9.1 was released to the public.

Do you use any adblocking?

Using PM 27.9.1 on Windows 7 x86...

For the past 5-6 hours, I've browsed around while keeping three tabs each open from both of the sites that were named as a trigger: tvguide.co.uk and liveleak.com.

If relevant, I use an adblocker.

There has been zero connection loss, not a hiccup.

An update from the PC mentioned earlier, TV Guide is a Pinned tab, uptime is in excess of 7 days and it's still using a 'normal' amount of memory (Process Explorer is hammering the weak CPU):

Thanks all for trying to replicate the issue,

FYI I'm using a hosts file, see http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm on this win10 laptop

I use MVPS hosts file as part of my uBlock subscriptions, I also run several other subscriptions in the hosts file (meaning all programs are covered by the hosts, which is primarily biased against malware sites, uBlockO subscriptions are mainly ad-blocking in the browser(s) only). When I use TV Guide in Pale Moon x64 on my main PC and disable uBlockO - it causes PM to lose connection... So, there's something trying to load from there which is causing a loss of connection for PM for me, based on a quick test, it might only be triggered occasionally, like some rotating ad delivery network.
