I use the Context Search X add-on, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... src=search , to add search engines.

When I do that, it changes the default, which I would prefer it not to do.

Is there any way to get Pale Moon and that add-on to not change the default?

Context Search X allows you to specify a default search engine for context searches.
In the "Manage Search Engine List" window, select the search engine you want to use by default, then click the "Context Menu" button and check the "Default" option:
When you've specified the default search engine, you need to make sure Context Search X actually uses it.
Click the "Other Options" button and verify that the "Enable Default Engine" option is checked:
