Localization status and info

Unread post by Moonchild » 2016-01-18, 13:30

I'll try to keep a current status post for languages here, as we're dealing with some major changes in terms of localization.

General information:
  • Compared to previously, we will have fewer localizations. It's pointless to try and support a language that we don't have active translators for.
  • Our list will still be globally encompassing as far as major languages is concerned or languages in foreign scripts for populations that are unlikely to be fluent in English (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, etc.)
  • Your help is greatly appreciated to improve upon and update these language packs! See below for the current way of providing translations to Pale Moon.
Current translation status for individual languages:
  • Languages currently complete:
    • cs - Czech
    • de - German
    • en-GB - English (British)
    • es-AR - Spanish (Argentina) ‡
    • fr - French
    • nl - Dutch
    • ru - Russian
    • sl - Slovenian
    • zh-CN - Simplified Chinese
  • Languages that are incomplete (some English text) but should be correct otherwise:
    • ar - Arabic
    • da - Danish ‡
    • el - Greek
    • es-ES - Spanish (Spain)
    • es-MX - Spanish (Mexico)
    • fi - Finnish
    • gl-ES - Galician (Spain)
    • hr - Croatian
    • hu - Hungarian
    • is - Icelandic
    • it - Italian
    • ja - Japanese
    • kn - Kannada (India)
    • pl - Polish ‡
    • pt-BR - Portuguese (Brazil) ‡
    • tr - Turkish
    • vi - Vietnamese
    • zh-TW - Traditional Chinese
  • Languages with known problems like mistranslations, incorrect terms/window sizes or fall-out from machine translations that have not been corrected:
    • ko - Korean
    • pt-PT - Portuguese (Portugal)
    • ro - Romanian
    • sk - Slovak
    • sr - Serbian
    • sv-SE - Swedish
If a language is not in this list, we do not currently support it.

The gritty
We're back to square one and do not have a localization solution at this time. Sorry that I can't make it convenient for y'all right now to translate, but language packs can be updated after the release as well (they are updated through the add-on manager).
Getting compatible base packs out there, even if they have some errors, is my main priority right now. I cannot delay v26 too long because there are important web compatibility issues with 25.* versions that must be addressed ASAP by switching to a Goanna-based browser.

Whatever solution we use afterwards will have to handle our file formats flawlessly because I will not spend another marathon session working through 31k words x 33 languages.

I will provide more details after this release of v26 has settled down. Please have a little patience.
