Changing search provider of searchbox with up/down array

Unread post by Supernova » 2014-07-05, 23:52

What's the idea behind ? Clicking to get the dropdown list and then choosing the search engine, while visual, is not very fast. And having to change it back after is painful.

The idea here is to get the ability to navigate between your search engine in the box with up and down array (if you have 20 search engines it may be of little use, but who use more than 3/4 on a regular basis ? Have more than 7/8 in total ? And keeping up/down pressed may allow to go to the next engine, making it easier)
If you already type something in the box, using arrays is faster to get the engine you want and if it could go back to the default engine after the search is launched it would definitely use better searchbox ability of using multiple providers. However this is incompatible with search engines which give suggestions as you type, which is seen as an important feature by many (as you guessed, not by me), so it could only be an option.

I really don't see any purpose for this. If you think switching back to your main search engine is a pain, why don't you just install the "Keyword Search" add-on, so you can always search with your main search engine in the URL bar?

Pale Moon shouldn't become bloated with options for everything; specific needs can be met by installing the right add-ons.

The current method of switching search engines is just fine - if you need to constantly change them (which is not typical use) then you may need to look into some extension that will help you with your workflow.

Also, DuckDuckGo supports using bangs to search other search engines directly. Keeping DDG as your search engine and prefixing your search with !g for example will search Google, instead.

@jumba: Good suggestion, I didn't know that. I found that ctrl + scroll up/down works, too.

@Supernova: You could also try the "Context Search X" add-on. I just installed it, and I really like it.
