If you really need this functionality and other options are unacceptable, then you should make an add-on, or rent a coder to have them make one for you ;)

It shouldn't take too much time to simply overlay a control (the tab favicon has an id that can be used to add a mouse event)

not on all. plus, there are plenty of users who prefer to retain close button functionality for various reasons, so for those users I think this tweak would work quite well.

This addon adds feature to close tabs with double click:
